CBD can be safe for cats when used correctly and under veterinary guidance. It may help with anxiety, arthritis, inflammation, and digestive issues. Dosage depends on your cat’s weight, age, and health needs.
That said, we know there’s still a lot of confusion out there about how CBD actually works for cats. Seems like dogs get all the attention, right? Not here at VetCS. Our feline CBD formulas are specifically designed for cats and their famously picky ways. As the main customer support lead, I get asked all the time about dosing and how CBD can help with different health issues in cats. I wanted to cut through some of the fluff out there and share clear information to help you make the best decision for your furry feline.
How much CBD oil should I give my cat?
Sounds like this should be pretty straightforward, right? Well, determining the right dosage of CBD oil for your cat involves more than a “one size fits all” approach. Factors such as your cat’s weight, age, overall health, and the reason for using CBD all play an important role.
At VetCS, our feline formulas are designed to be highly concentrated and palatable, so you can give a lower volume dose while still delivering the right milligram concentration for your cat’s needs.
VetCS Feline CBD Oil Dosing (2mg CBD per drop)
- Cats under 10 lbs: Week 1 → 2–4 drops, Week 2+ → 1–2 drops
- Cats 11–20 lbs: Week 1 → 4–8 drops, Week 2+ → 2–4 drops
- Cats 21–30 lbs: Week 1 → 8–12 drops, Week 2+ → 4–8 drops
Tip: This is a very concentrated formulation, so only 1–2 drops are needed for most cats. For example, a 10 lb cat receiving 2 drops morning and night will get a 65-day supply from one bottle.
We provide dosing recommendations to help you start safely and effectively. And if you have questions about your cat’s specific case, our veterinary team is always here to help.
How CBD Oil Can Help Cats With Common Health Issues
Cats deal with many of the same health challenges as dogs, from stress and anxiety to arthritis and digestive issues. CBD oil isn’t a cure-all, but it can provide meaningful support when used consistently and under veterinary guidance. Here are some of the most common reasons cat owners turn to CBD.
CBD Oil for Cat Anxiety
Cats experiencing stress, whether from travel, changes in the household, or separation, may benefit from CBD’s calming effects. Unlike sedation, CBD helps reduce the physiological response to stress, allowing cats to feel calmer and more at ease. Many owners notice that their cats are more relaxed and better able to adapt to stressful environments when CBD is used consistently. Learn more about our CBD calming products.
CBD for Cats With Arthritis and Inflammation
As cats age, arthritis and joint inflammation become more common. You might notice stiffness, less jumping, or decreased activity. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to help modulate pain and reduce inflammation, offering support for mobility and comfort.
In fact, a 2023 placebo-controlled study found that CBD was safe and well-tolerated in cats, and showed promise in reducing inflammation and improving comfort in chronic painful conditions. While it wasn’t a “cure,” it highlighted CBD’s role as a supportive option alongside veterinary care.
At VetCS, we’ve seen many cats regain confidence in their movements with daily CBD. Consistent use may help them feel more comfortable navigating stairs, playing again, or simply enjoying daily life with less stiffness.
CBD for Cats With IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
CBD has shown promise in supporting cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) By reducing intestinal inflammation and modulating gut sensitivity, CBD may ease symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and poor appetite. While IBD is a complex condition that often requires multiple management strategies, CBD can be a valuable part of a cat’s treatment plan when used under veterinary guidance.
